JT08 - Gold brooch with opal
This 18ct gold brooch features a crown shape motif with an opal at the centre and gold-plated tassels. These elements reflect a fascination with the Orient, which was popular in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
This piece would have been highly fashionable, using motifs from ancient Egypt which were exciting discoveries at the time.
Once belonging to Marie Otillie Johannsen, her husband Gerhardt bought this brooch from a cameleer hawker travelling north while the couple and their family were living and working at Hermannsberg.
