HerStory

Jean Ethel BURNS

Born: December 1919

Died: 25/05/2019

Special Achievements:

In 1937, as Australia's youngest female pilot, Jean became the first female parachutist to jump from an aeroplane in Australia.

Jean joined the Royal Victorian Aero Club at the age of 14, was flying at 16 and gained her A class pilot's licence at 17.

As Australia's youngest female pilot,  she held the record until Brigid Holmes broke it as a younger 17-year-old in 1952.

Additional Information:

Her flying was ended by the restrictions of WWII.  Taking it up again later in life, Jean was so bored by level flying and regulations she gave it up for go-karting!
