Description: Puccini's great opera, one of the most popular and still performed regularly, was written in 1904. After a disastrous start, with a too large soprano and a 3 Act score, Puccini re-wrote the opera and it became a hit. Amy Castles, an Australia dramatic soprano, had a career at the pinnacle of opera, singing in London, Vienna and New York, but also returning to Australia to tour and perfom. This photograph was taken of her during her perfomances of the Australian premiere of Madama Butterfly (or else is a local copy of a photograph she brought home, as noted below) Date: 1909 Source: https://www.flickr.com/photos/statelibraryofnsw/12578047094/ Author: State Library of New South Wales collection
