Special Achievements:

First woman Australian Labor Party (ALP) member in the House of Representatives (1974) 

Australia's first woman Speaker of either House of the Federal Parliament (House of Representatives: 1986)

In the Queen's Birthday Honours of June 1990, Child was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia.

Additional Information:

Then Prime Minister Julia Gillard described herself as 'one of the women who walked through the door that Joan so brilliantly opened' (Australian, 6 March 2013).

Inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2001
