Sarah set herself the task of recording her activities and travels in a daily diary. These diaries of her experiences in Papua New Guinea between 1921-1937 have now been printed under the title Malaguna Road: The Papua and New Guinea Diaries of Sarah Chinn Chinnery (edited by Kate Fortune).
“An amateur photographer known for her unique ethnographic photography of the Indigenous peoples of New Guinea, where she lived between 1921-1937. … Later in Australia the focus of Chinnery's photography shifted to portraits of artists and floral studies.”
Many of her photographs, some accompanying articles, were published in such newspapers as The Courier-Mail (Brisbane), The Herald (Melbourne), the New York Times (New York), The Star (Melbourne), The Sun (Sydney), and The Sunday Mail (Brisbane).
“She considered becoming a professional photographer but instead chose to study dentistry, following in her [three] brothers' footsteps.”
