Roma Flinders MITCHELL

Special Achievements:

The first woman to "take silk", when promoted to Queen's Counsel in 1962, she is Australia's first female Judge when appointed to the Supreme Court of South Australia on 25 September 1965. The courtroom changed dramatically from thenceforth, not only with her presence on the bench but, for the first time, women were also permitted on South Australian juries from 1966.

1962 - First woman Queen’s Counsel in Australia.
1965 - First female Supreme Court judge in Australia.
1972 - First woman deputy chancellor of a university.
1981-82 – First human rights commissioner.
1983 - First woman chancellor of a university.
1991-96 - First woman state governor.
