“It grabs me, tugs at my mind and body. I just have to be up there, the sky becomes my playground. The smell of propane in the morning awakens my senses. I open the burner tap and the flame shoots forward. All my attention and energy is focused on the inflation of the balloon and I am home. Born to fly. A privilege to find my passion in life.”
In 1999 Ruth represented Australia as a pilot competing in the prestigious Gordon Bennett Gas Balloon Race launching from Albuquerque, USA.
Her love of extreme ballooning drew her back to pilot ‘Bernadette’ in the same gas balloon race from Bern, Switzerland in 2018. After 33 hours without sleep, little food and water Ruth landed her gas balloon in an Italian vineyard.
