Special Achievements:

One of two first women (with Denise Allen) to be awarded the Antarctic Medal for outstanding service in the Antarctic (1989), where she was medical officer during two winters (1981 and 1984).

Additional Information:

Dr Diana Lynn Williams was the Medical Officer at Macquarie Island in 1981, at Mawson in 1984 and at Heard Island for the 1985/86 summer, providing health care services to a very high standard.

Diana’s research work, which culminated in the award of her Doctorate of Medicine, was performed under extreme difficulties without the usual laboratory support. This work has been recognised internationally as making an outstanding contribution to areas of immunology, endocrinology and health in polar regions.

She completed the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Family Medicare Program and joined Mowbray Family Practice in 1994.

Dr Williams is interested in all aspects of medicine, including women’s health and mental health.

She especially enjoys the long term contact with people that characterises General Practice and retains an active interest in outdoor activity and fitness.
