Special Achievements
In 2000, Marcela Bilek became the first woman Professor of Applied Physics at University of Sydney. She is now Head of the Applied and Plasma Physics Research Group at the University of Sydney.
Marcela completed her PhD in Engineering at the University of Cambridge in 1996. She stayed in Cambridge as a Research Fellow until October 2000. At the same time, Marcela collaborated at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in California, USA, working closely with Ian Brown, head of the Plasma Applications Group and was also a visiting professor at Technische Universitad Hamburg-Harburg in Germany.
In November 2000, Marcela came back to Australia and was appointed Professor of Applied Physics at the University of Sydney. She currently leads a large research group that specializes in materials and energy related technologies. Some of her research includes materials physics, plasma deposition and processing, thin film materials, vacuum glazing, and cross-disciplinary research in biointerfaces and medicine.
