Gillian Armstrong is an award-winning Australian feature film and documentary director, whose films often feature female perspectives and protagonists.  Gillian became the first woman film director in Australia since the 1930s, when she directed My Brilliant Career (1979), a movie unique for its predominantly female production team including producer, director, writer, production and art director.  She later became the first Australian woman to direct a Hollywood movie (Mrs Soffel, 1985).


Gillian was awarded the A.M. (Member of the Order of Australia) in the 1984 Queen's New Years Honours List for her services to the film industry.
