Special Achievements

Joyce Ackroyd was a professor of Japanese language and literature, and one of the pioneers who changed the pattern of Japanese studies in Australia. In 1965 she founded the Department of Japanese at Queensland University. She was the first Australian to receive an award from the Japanese Translators Association for her scholarly work.

In 1982, Joyce Ackroyd was awarded the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday honours list, in recognition of her service to education. In 1983, she was awarded a Third Class Order of The Precious Crown of His Majesty The Emperor of Japan, in recognition of outstanding contribution to the development of Japanese Studies in Australia and to the promotion of goodwill and understanding between the people of Australia and Japan.
