Special Achievements
- Karen Kime was ordained as a priest in the Anglican Church of Australia in 2000.She was the first Aboriginal woman to become a priest in New South Wales.
- In February 2012, Karen was made an archdeacon. She became the first female Aboriginal to hold such a position in the Anglican Church of Australia.She is responsible for indigenous ministry in Canberra and Goulburn and is also the indigenous services manager for Anglicare. Kime has been responsible for bringing the needs of Aboriginal Australians to the attention of the Anglican Church and calling for new appointments and structures to address social inequality.
- She was a delegate on the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in 2013. Karen is a member of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Council and is the Co Chair of the National Reconciliation Network for Anglicare Australia. Karen lectured at Charles Stuart University and developed the first teacher education program for primary teachers in indigenous teaching and learning and holds a place on the Ethics Committee of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies.
Additional Information
- Karen is a Birripi woman. Her extended family come from the Dingo Creek region of Kempsey, on the north coast of New South Wales. Her passions include a love of the environment and issues of social justice for all people.
