On International Women’s Day, March 8 2008, this wool tapestry was presented to the Museum to honour Australian women involved in pioneering aviation.
The Australian Pioneer Aviatrix Tapestry found a home here at the suggestion of pioneer woman pilot and our then Patron, Nancy-Bird Walton.
Started in 2002 and completed in 2008, this community project took over 7,000 hours to weave.
Measuring 5 metres x 1.3 metres, the tapestry was worked on by people from Australia and all over the world.
To create this woven tapestry, a grant of $23,000 from the Queensland Gaming Benefit Fund was used to purchase materials - including a purpose-built loom and merino wool from the Victorian Tapestry Guild.
The women featured are:
The motifs are not without humour. in addition to the caricature portraits, you can find a stork carrying a baby, witches on broomsticks and chickens.

An 18ct gold brooch shaped like a grapevine, twigs and grapes with safety chain and pin.
The symbol of vines and grapes was a popular motif in Australian goldfields jewellery manufacture from the early gold rushes in the Central Goldfields of Victoria from the 1850s.
Representing the Christian faith, brooches like these enjoyed a resurgence in popularity during the Kalgoorlie gold rushes from the 1890s until the 1930s.
This brooch was a gift for Marie Otillie Johannsen from her eldest brother Wilhelm Hoffman in 1895. As Marie was 12 or 13 years old at the time, and we have confirmation souvenirs from the same year belonging to her, we can assume it was a reverent gift to commemorate a milestone considered highly significant within the Lutheran Chuch to which the family belonged at the time.

A finely worked sterling silver brooch shaped like a daffodil with leaves with a safety chain and pin.
While the daffodil’s primary symbolism is that of new beginnings, rebirth and the coming of spring, it has many others.
Some of the most common meanings for the daffodil flower are Creativity, Inspiration, Renewal and Vitality, Awareness and Inner Reflection, Memory and Forgiveness.
It belonged to Marie Otillie Johannsen, whose second daughter Trudy (Gertrude), sent it from Darwin as a Mother’s Day Present to Alice Springs where Marie was living.

9ct rose gold hollow curb link bracelet with padlock clasp and safety chain.
This bracelet looks heavy, but the curb links are hollow, as was common for this style of jewellery in the early 1900s.
It was a present for Marie Otillie Johannsen from her husband Gerhardt after his return to Deep Well Station in the Northern Territory after selling cattle in Adelaide.
Object ID: JT09 - Gold curb link bracelet with heart shaped clasp
Date Made: 1918
Maker: J.W. Wendt
This 18ct gold brooch features a crown shape motif with an opal at the centre and gold-plated tassels. These elements reflect a fascination with the Orient, which was popular in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
This piece would have been highly fashionable, using motifs from ancient Egypt which were exciting discoveries at the time.
Once belonging to Marie Otillie Johannsen, her husband Gerhardt bought this brooch from a cameleer hawker travelling north while the couple and their family were living and working at Hermannsberg.
Object ID: JT08 - Gold brooch with opal
Date Made: 1914
This celluloid doll is dressed with a hand made cotton cloth nappy held in place with two safety pins, frilled synthetic fabric nightie and has a pink quilted synthetic fabric bed jacket and hand-crocheted cotton bonnet.
Celluloid is one of the first synthetic plastics ever created. It is made from wood products that include cellulose nitrate and camphor. First created in 1863, it was a popular material to make items as diverse as jewellery and dolls from the 1870s through the 1930s. Celluloid is flammable, deteriorates easily if exposed to moisture and can be prone to cracking and yellowing.
Because celluloid dolls were flammable, fragile and crushable, they fell out of favour by the 1950s.
SIGNIFICANCE
This doll was owned by Marie Ottilie Johannsen’s daughter Elsa who spent her early childhood years at Hermannsberg Mission from 1909 and Deep Well Station from 1915.
If you look closely you can see where the doll’s cracked head has been repaired and her arms taped to prevent splitting. She is a remarkable survivor from a harsh environment, yet ironically the arid Northern Territory climate will have contributed to the longevity of the celluloid.
You can find out more about Marie Johannsen in our HerStory archive.

This walker was made using plans published in Farmer’s Weekly, a magazine published by the primary Producers Association of WA (now the WA Farmer’s Federation).
There were other plans in the magazine for items that could be made from materials that might be found around the farm.
The walker is well-constructed and finished off cleanly to prevent children from scratching or injure themselves from protruding parts.
The donor, Jan Millington, remembers her mother saying: 'I could dress you up and put you in this and you’d stay clean'.
Resourcefulness, recycling and long term care of belongings for people living in remote parts of Australia illustrate the stark contrast between urban and outback lives.

Traditionally crochet was worked almost exclusively in very fine cotton yarn to create or embellish household items such as curtains, table cloths or place mats. Crochet was often added as decoration or trimming on collars and fine lawn handkerchiefs. The frill on the front of a man's shirt was often crochet work. Crochet hooks are usually made from steel, aluminium or plastic in a range of sizes according to their diameter. It has ninety-six pages and the book is in good condition.

There is seldom to be found in Australia one publication that has a variety of knitting patterns, featuring overseas designs but using locally available pure wool yarns. Our belief that the Australian knitter would appreciate such a book prompted us to utilize the resources of our extensive International Wool Secretariat network. The design were written in Australia and garments knitted and photographed locally. The inclusion of two Australian designers illustrates the extent and talent available locally in the field of fashion knitting. We know you will enjoy knitting from this book and making for yourself your own fabulous international design. The book has a hundred and four pages and in excellent condition.
