Special Achievements

  • In 2015, Michelle Payne was the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup in its 155-year history, riding Prince of Penzance.

  • In her winning ride, Michelle was, coincidentally, wearing the suffragette colours: purple, green and white. In an interview shortly after her Melbourne Cup win, Payne said that horseracing is a "chauvinistic sport" and later stated that she hopes her win "helps female jockeys" (ABC, 3 November 2015). At the same Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington in 2015, she also rode the winner in the Hilton Hotels Stakes.  Major victories include: Toorak Handicap (2009), The Thousand Guineas (2010), The Melbourne Cup (2015). Honours include The Australian newspaper's Australian of the Year; Moomba Monarch with brother Stevie.
