Special Achievements

  • One of the first women police in the Northern Territory.  All commenced their recruit training (with a number of men) in February 1961, and the course "passed out" on 10 April 1961.  All five worked in the Women Police Section and the Criminal Investigation Branch.  By 1964, only Johanna Wendler was still in Northern Territory police; the other four had married, and, therefore, had to resign.

Additional Information

  • Johanna served in the Northern Territory until 1967, then joined the Australian Capital Territory Police Force; promoted to sergeant within a year; and in 1979 to senior sergeant; rose steadily through the ranks of the Australian Federal Police becoming Chief Inspector in the Northern Region in 1982.
